Dragon Ball Kai (renamed internationally as Dragon Ball Z Kai) originally ran from 2009 to lớn 2011 covering the Saiyan, Freeza, & Cell arcs of the Dragon Ball Z TV series. It was created as a 20th anniversary "refresh" using the original animation (with the occasional re-trace and touch-up), re-voiced by the (mostly) original cast, và contained a new musical score by Kenji Yamamoto. The musical score was stripped out at the very end và replaced with original Dragon Ball Z music by Shunsuke Kikuchi due to plagiarism concerns.

The series ended with the Cell arc for no officially-stated reasons, but with common-sense & general research pointing lớn an oversaturation of the market và primarily due to merchandise sales decreasing year-over-year in a drastic fashion.
The "refreshed" series did well enough internationally, though, that Toei was convinced to pick it back up again a few years later to vì the Boo story arc & wrap it all up. It wasn't originally planned to lớn even air on TV in Japan; they were just going khổng lồ produce it for the international market. When Toriko ended up floundering for them, though, they ended up using it on TV in Japan, as well.
There really isn't a "Kai 2014" in official marketing; it's just a continuation of the same series from before.
In terms of actual differences between the two, however:
Beyond the plagiarism concerns và musical replacement, the Boo arc swapped musical composers entirely. Norihito Sumitomo was brought on, who had also worked on / would continue lớn work on Battle of Gods, Resurrection 'F', & Dragon Ball Super.
While the Saiyan, Freeza, & Cell arcs were remastered in the original 4:3 aspect ratio (with only the TV broadcast & DVD release being cropped to lớn widescreen), the Boo arc was cropped lớn widescreen from the start.
In addition to lớn the cropping, Toei brought their remastering in-house, whereas the Saiyan, Freeza, và Cell arcs were remastered by Pony Canyon. There is a very huge drop in remastering chất lượng in the Boo arc, with a noticeable green tint throughout the entire run.
There were amazingly TWO separate versions of the arc produced: one for Japan, & one for the international market. The Japanese broadcast is an EDITED-DOWN version of what they were producing for the international market. This is only in the first dozen or so episodes, where more nội dung is cut out to lớn quicken up the pace. At some point, they two versions match back up again in terms of overall episode production.
The international version has separate theme songs, too: "Fight It Out!" (by Masatoshi Ono) & "Never Give Up" (by Juneur) are the OP/ED respectively, while the Japanese broadcast has "Kuu-Zen-Zetsu-Go" (Dragon Soul/Takayoshi Tanimoto) và five different ending themes ("Dear Zarathustra" by Good Morning America, "Pure Heart" by Leo Ieiri, "Oh Yeah!!!!!!!" by Czecho no Republic, "GALAXY" by Kyuso Nekokami, & "Don't Let Me Down" by Gacharic Spin).
